Question: What does Independence Now do?
Answer: IN is a center for independent living (CIL). We are not a place where people live. We offer services that empower people with disabilities to reach their goals. And we advocate to:

  • Increase affordable and accessible housing
  • Improve transportation services
  • Improve personal assistance services

Question: What is a Center for Independent Living or CIL?
Answer: Centers for independent living are nonprofit, non-residential community organizations run by and for people with disabilities. We provide an array of services that enable people with disabilities to reach their self-determined goals.


Question: What is the Independent Living philosophy?
Answer: There are several principles that make up the Independent Living Philosophy, including:

  • Consumer control and direction (this means the person with the disability makes decisions, not the professional)
  • Self-advocacy
  • Equal access to everything in society
  • Inclusion in the community

Question: Can you help me find housing?
Answer: There are long waiting lists for apartments with rent subsidies, but call us. We can give you information about applying for housing, how long you might have to wait and where there are accessible apartments. We have a monthly houseing group who provide peer support, information, and empower advocacy.


Question: Can you help me pay for a ramp and other modifications to my home?
Answer: : IN has a small grant from the Prince George's Department of Housing and Community Development that can pay for low cost modifications in rental properties. We also can help home owners understand the various loan programs.


Question: Can I really go back to work without losing my Social Security Benefits?
Answer: :IN has Benefits Specialists who can help you understand the Social Security Work Incentives and how work will effect them so you can better determine what choice to make with confidence. Call them at 301-587-4137.
