A Consumer Shares Her Learning Story | Learning Disabilities Month

Graphic featuring Independence Now Consumer, Fatima, with the quote Through learning, we gain knowledge. We gain power. We grow, we thrive. We unleash our talents. But first, we must listen to everyone.

Fatima Moreno is second year student at Montgomery College Takoma Park Camp. Fatima has a Learning Disability and uses Disability Support Services DDS. However, at the start of her college career. Fatima was not confident with disclosing her disability, this made the process of requesting accommodation both  overwhelmed and intimidated. with the process of requesting accommodations. But, after working with the Youth Transitional Specialist at Independent Now, on Identifying several accommodations. Fatima did not only have better understanding of how her LD contributes to her learning style. And, today Fatima is able to request services from DSS independently and is able to articulate what she needs for her instructors, which has contributed to her success. In the fall 2019, Fatima enrolled in first credit college courses and received An in Psychology.

Thanks to the ADA and IDEA, we have made significant progress through laws and accommodations in schools. Yet there is much work to be done. Too many are left behind, particularly in the disability community, and the statistics are alarming:
  • One in every two students with a learning disability faced a school disciplinary action such as suspension or expulsion in 2011.
  • Black and Hispanic students with disabilities experience much higher rates of school disciplinary actions, higher rates of drop out and lower rates of graduation.
  • One-third of students with LD have been held back in a grade at least once.
  • Students with LD earn lower grades and experience higher rates of course failure
Learning is defined as a “major life activity” by the ADA. Through learning, we gain knowledge. We gain power. We grow, we thrive. We unleash our talents. But first, we must listen to everyone.
