How Leon Stays Connected During COVID-19

Leon Samuels is a consumer from Montgomery County who has been with Independence Now for over a decade.

“I joined the DC chapter of the United Spinal Support Group hosted by Independence Now to reconnect with the Spinal Cord Injury Community. Before COVID, I was very active and enjoyed attending monthly meetings at Independence Now. The group allowed me to stay connected with the community, provided resources, and helped me to build self-advocacy skills. Ms. Shannon was always great about letting me know when something was happening.”

Like many people during the COVID-19 pandemic, Leon was isolated and missed being in the community. And while Independence Now hosts many online events, Leon was unable to participate because he didn’t have a computer. Luckily, through funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) Act, Independence Now was able to assist Leon with getting a new Chromebook. Now, he’s excited to improve his computer skills, participate in zoom meetings that will reconnect him to the community, meet doctors through Telehealth, and connect with family and friends.

“I’m not a computer guy, I’m still learning how to maneuver through the computer. I successfully joined my first zoom meeting to the MedStar Health‘s United Spinal Resource Holiday event. I’ve never done a Zoom meeting before. I was very excited to have access and attend. I will continue regain independence through learning how to use my Chromebook. Thank you Independence Now for your support!”

We’re so excited for Leon and can’t wait to see him at our future events!
