For almost a month, Independence Now has been hosting a weekly Smartphone Boot Camp for consumers who are blind or have low vision. Attendees have learned how to swipe and read Apps on the screen, locate dial pad and manually dial number, swipe to read through recent calls, and add names and numbers of new contacts. Instructor Libra Robinson, who is also blind, encourages students to use their new skills as much as possible and then come back the next week and show her what they can do!
Angela has been attending the Boot Camp and she says “It’s been wonderful! For years Rochelle has been after me to get a smartphone. I finally got one last December so that I could monitor my Mom’s blood sugar, but I didn’t really know how to use it. This class, even though it’s virtual and in a group setting, I am still really taking in everything. I can access my voicemail, see the date, see who it was from and delete it! I am so glad that Independence Now has contracted with Libra to offer the class.”
