Independence Now is highlighting Consumer Success Stories ahead of our Annual Meeting. Join us on Thursday, June 8 at 1:30 pm at the Hyattsville Library to hear annual reporting, success stories from our Consumers, and for our annual award presentation.
Shukrat Abbas has been a consumer of Independence Now since October 2018. She is one of my most inspiring consumers because she is the true definition of a go-getter. During her time at Independence Now, she has worked consistently to create and obtain realistic goals that help her to be productive in preparation for going back to work, despite the challenges of multiple sclerosis. Shukrat is a computer programmer by trade. Every year she successfully completes one or two IT courses which led to her getting a new certification. Over the last two years, she has really stepped up the pace. In 2022 alone, she completed several courses on advanced web design and computer networking. Now that she has accomplished those things, she is actively working on getting occupational therapy and obtaining a scooter to improve her mobility so she can be out and about independently and roam free.
