It is with mixed emotions that we share the news that our esteemed Executive Director, Sarah Basehart, will be stepping down from her role at Independence Now (IN) effective December 31, 2023. Sarah has been an integral part of our organization for 13 years, leading with passion and dedication in advancing the rights and independence of individuals with disabilities.
Sarah has accepted a new challenge as the Executive Director of Community Reach of Montgomery County, and while we will miss her tremendously, we are excited for the impact she will undoubtedly make in her new role. Sarah’s legacy at Independence Now includes groundbreaking initiatives such as the establishment of the Supports Planning Agency (SPA) in 2015 and the expansion of services in the Money Follows the Person (MFP) program. Her tireless advocacy for fair housing and housing opportunities has left an indelible mark on our community.
In the interim, we are pleased to announce that Shannon Minnick, our Deputy Director, will be stepping into the role of interim Executive Director. Shannon has been an invaluable part of Independence Now for over a decade, starting as an Independent Living (IL) Specialist and progressing to Director of IL services before assuming the role of Deputy Director over two years ago. Her wealth of experience and dedication to our mission make her an excellent choice to lead us through this transition period.
“Shannon possesses an amazing ability to find strategic and beneficial collaborations with others – she is an absolute shining star in her capacity to do so,” says Sarah Basehart. “I’m confident that under her leadership, Independence Now will continue to thrive and make lasting impacts in the lives of those we serve.”
“This is a bittersweet moment for us all,” says Shannon Minnick. “Sarah has been a mentor to all of us. She has created a space at IN that makes everyone feel like their voices are heard and that they feel valued throughout the organization. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Sarah’s passion – it radiates throughout the office. She will be greatly missed.”
We extend our deepest gratitude to Sarah for her unwavering commitment and leadership. Please join us in wishing her the best in her new endeavor. We also offer our full support to Shannon as she takes on her new responsibilities, confident that the organization will continue to thrive under her guidance.
Thank you for your continued support of Independence Now.
