As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we honor the incredible legacy of Judy Heumann, a woman who changed the course of history for people with disabilities. Known as the Mother of the Disability Rights Movement, Judy’s advocacy, resilience, and leadership transformed the world into a more accessible and inclusive place.
A Life Dedicated to Advocacy
Judy Heumann’s fight for disability rights began early. After being denied entry to public school as a child due to her wheelchair use, she refused to accept the barriers placed before her. Instead, she became a powerful voice for change.
Her advocacy took shape through major milestones, including leading the 504 Sit-in in 1977—the longest nonviolent occupation of a federal building in U.S. history—which resulted in the enforcement of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the first federal civil rights law protecting people with disabilities. Her work helped pave the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, ensuring greater accessibility and equal opportunities for all.
A Legacy That Lives On
Judy Heumann’s impact extends beyond legislation. She co-founded the World Institute on Disability, served in key government positions, and worked tirelessly to ensure that disability rights remained at the forefront of national and global conversations. Her activism was deeply personal and profoundly effective—she didn’t just advocate for policy change, she fought for the dignity and freedom of all people with disabilities.
Her legacy continues to inspire Independence Now and countless other organizations committed to independent living and disability rights. Her work reminds us that accessibility is not a privilege—it’s a right.
Continuing the Fight
Judy’s voice may be gone, but her mission lives on in each of us. At Independence Now, we carry forward her vision by empowering individuals with disabilities to live independently, advocating for policies that uphold accessibility, and educating our communities about the importance of inclusion.
This Women’s History Month, we honor Judy Heumann’s tireless dedication, her unwavering courage, and her groundbreaking achievements. We will continue to fight for the world she envisioned—one where barriers are broken, voices are heard, and independence is celebrated.
Thank you, Judy. Your legacy lives on.
