Independence Now welcomed consumers, community partners, and stakeholders to its 2025 Annual Meeting on July 17 in Capitol Heights. This year’s theme, Strength Through Struggle: Power and Progress, reflected the ongoing work of advancing equity, access, and independent living for people with disabilities in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
Staff and board members shared updates on the organization’s program performance, finances, and recent accomplishments. Attendees also heard meaningful consumer success stories highlighting how Independence Now’s services support people with disabilities to live independently in their communities.
Ayesha Carr, Area Work Incentive Coordinator, provided a helpful presentation on Social Security and work incentives, offering guidance on navigating employment and benefits.
One of the most memorable moments came during a special recognition of Danielle Bustos, Maryland Youth Leadership Forum (MD YLF) Coordinator. Danielle received a citation from Maryland Governor Wes Moore for her outstanding leadership of the annual forum for high school students with disabilities. The award was presented by Carol Beatty, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Disabilities.
The event also featured remarks from Deya Dimitrova, a YLF alum and current college student, who spoke about the profound impact YLF had on her personal and academic journey.
As part of the meeting, Independence Now encouraged all attendees and community members to share their input through the annual consumer satisfaction survey. Feedback is still welcome and helps the organization improve its programs and services. To complete the survey, visit the link below.
