International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today, we join the United Nations in recognizing that true social progress is impossible without the full inclusion, leadership, and rights of people with disabilities. Around the world—and here in our own communities—people with disabilities still face barriers in employment, income, social protection, and the basic right to make decisions about their own lives.

Centers for Independent Living were created to change that.

Every day, CILs work with people with disabilities to advance dignity, autonomy, and equal opportunity through peer support, skills training, advocacy, and access to community-based services. Our mission aligns directly with the UN’s call to build societies where people with disabilities are not only included, but recognized as agents of change in shaping a just, equitable, and sustainable world.

Disability inclusion isn’t optional—it’s essential for social, economic, cultural, and political progress.

Today, and every day, we reaffirm our commitment to a future where all people can live freely, fully, and independently in the community.
