The annual National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) Conference brought together Centers for Independent Living, disability advocates, policymakers, and community leaders from across the country under this year’s powerful theme: Protect, Persist, and Prosper.
Maryland was well represented by Independence Now, The IMAGE Center of Maryland, the Southern Maryland Center for Independent Living, the Maryland Department of Rehabilitation Services, and the Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council. Together with hundreds of advocates from around the nation, participants spent the week sharing strategies, strengthening partnerships, celebrating leaders in the disability rights movement, and preparing for the work that lies ahead.
This year’s conference served as a reminder that the Independent Living movement has always been built on advocacy. As policies and priorities continue to evolve, it is more important than ever for people with disabilities, Centers for Independent Living, allies, and advocates to have a strong voice in the decisions that affect our communities.
One of the conference’s most powerful moments came during NCIL’s annual march and rally on Capitol Hill. Despite threatening weather, hundreds of attendees marched together carrying a unified message: “We Won’t Go Back.” The rally featured remarks from former U.S. Senator Tom Harkin and other national leaders who reinforced the importance of protecting disability rights and ensuring people with disabilities remain at the table where decisions are made.
The energy throughout the conference reflected a shared commitment to safeguarding the progress that has been made while continuing to advocate for greater access, opportunity, and independence for future generations.
