IN’s American Education Week event will be on the importance of assistive technology, IEPs, s.504 accommodations, and self-advocacy in transitioning from a young student with disabilities into an adult/adult student with disabilities (in college and beyond).

Ms. Tiffany Johnson is the Principal at Whittier Education Campus, within D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) system, in Washington DC’s Takoma Park, right across the Maryland line. Though she has been an educator, teacher, and Assistant Principal for the last 15 years, Ms. Johnson views her most important role as an Advocate: “Reflection is our most valuable tool as instructional staff. We noticed that our special education students and English learners were not performing at the same rate as their peers, so we required every special education teacher to receive a certification and/or training in an intervention. We also established a Response to Intervention (RTI) team that connects students to the interventions they need… I often reflect on my students’ resiliency to refuel my passion to allow each student under my leadership to prove what’s possible throughout his or her academic journey.”
